~ 30 Years Later ~
"Hello son," Hamilton Fleming said when he was visiting Rawley
with
his wife on Parent's Day. "When's your crew race?"
Fernando (haha) Fleming's mother asked him, "Can we meet your friend
Jack?"
"Sure Mom. Later Dad. He told me his mother wanted to meet me too."
The three headed down the familiar hallways to a room Hamilton
remembered well. Oh my god.
"Yo Jack!" Fernando's voice called, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"Fleming! Meet my mom, Ms. Pratt."
With those sentences, both Hamilton's and Jaqueline's heads snapped
up, and found eachother looking in familiar eyes. Her hazel and his
piercing blue.
"Hello Hamilton. Its nice to see you after thirty years."
"Jake! Er, Jaqueline. How are you?"
Mrs. Fleming just looked back and forth between the two before she
remembered who Jaqueline was.
"I'm find. Been fine."
The voice he remembered spoke. The voice he had heard last. This
time, thought, not pierced by anger. It all came back.
"And you?"
"Oh. I'm good. This is my wife, Liz Fleming."
"How do you do Mrs. Fleming."
Quietly, Mrs. Fleming ushered out the two boys so Jake and Hamilton
could be alone. "See you at the Regatta honey," she called
before
leaving.
"It seems so far away, yet near." Hamilton's voice broke the icy
silence.
"No, it still seems like yesterday."
"Look Jake, If you're still hurt about that, I'm sorry. But it was so
long ago. I'm married. I have a happy life. I've moved on."
Those words hit hard. "It was the principle Hamilton! I thought I
could leave for almost a month and not have to worry. But apparently
not!"
"It was so long ago. I moved on. I had other relationships, even
though I never stopped loving you."
Jaqueline rolled her eyes. "Fine fine. Lets move on. I'm only here
for today, but I can give you my email address. We can email
eachother. I'd like that." Her eyes smiled at him.
He hugged her, and that was enough to assure him that he had achieved
peace. Life would be good, for he had what he wanted.
The End
